A Possible Roman Road from Buxton to the West

Margary Number: None

Distance: na

To the west of Buxton there is a puzzle. No known Roman roads but there surely must have been connections to the Cheshire Roman sites, especially Chester. This possible road is one contender but evidence west of Pym Chair is so far non-existent. More work needs to be done and research is continuing. It should be there somewhere.

Oblique 3D Lidar Image - possible section to Pym Chair

The logical route would have been a branch off the the Roman road from Buxton to Manchester, There was clearly an old road (and the modern one) heading that way.

The Ordnance Survey included references on their first edition mapping to a Roman road, The Street, and a Roman causeway.

Lots of braided trackways but none of them look like a Roman agger.

There is perhaps a short length of Roman-like agger over Pym Chair (see below). The old road course was via that nick in cliff face. There is a zig-zag but quite a fierce climb.

Pym Chair

This is the old road that the OS surveyors thought could be a Roman causeway.

The onward course is very uncertain. There have even been historic suggestions (Watkin) that the road turned through almost a right-angle and headed northwards towards Stockport and Manchester. Why come this way if that was the destination? To me a road to Chester is what is missing.
